We are also looking for the Reber connections to the families of Johnston and Hamm so that 100+ year old photographs may be returned to them. See the Reber Forum at: http://www.ybase.org/for details and where to see these photographs on the Web.

Comments: Great work. Your information is very clearly written and informative. Family tradition says that the Michaels were Jewish, however, all of the information I find on the early Germans who migrated to Pennsylvania says that they were "Reformed", Mennonites, etc. with no mention of Jewish immigration. Any suggestions for websites that might address this question?

Comments: Was fascinated to read your websites. Our frantz family member is my grandmother (from Panhandle of Texas) who married a Burnes in early 1900's. The amazing thing was her parents (Sarah & Clifford J. Frantz) named each of their children with two names and yet called them by their middle names. We could never understand why. We have always been told that our family heritage was Dutch from Pennsylvania (Black Dutch) whatever that means. Could it be that our ancestors migrated from Germany to Holland and then to America? We have our old family Bible that is from the 1700's and also shows a Grandma Whis(t)ler. Thanks for posting your websites!

Comments: Thank you for your article. I've grown up being told I was Pennsylvania Dutch. This always confused me as my ancestors came from Bohemia (now Austria). Also, I was told another line came from Holland. Then I heard it being referred to the Amish country..of course I know I'm not that. But I never knew the exact definition and your article answered that question very clearly. So, thank you.

Comments: I have been shown a different Coat of Arms than what you have on this site. I have known what the name means, however I would like to know, and hope to find out, where the name begain, i.e. country and year it first appeared. My grandfather was William Tatum Lautenschlager. I have been told that he come to NC from PA. I am just getting my feet wet in this research and though the tree might turn out to be large, my goal is to find the true Coat of Arms, be it yours or another one and where and when the name came into being.

Comments: I have gotten some background on the Roan line dating back to Samuel Roan whose birth was 1805 according to my grandmother who was a Crawley we are German on my fathers side of the family but we were all settled in Central PA (Lock Haven, Williamsport, Lemont, Bellefonte, Jersey Shore,---the counties of Northumberland, Lycoming and Centre)but my grandmother who was a Vance claims my mothers side was Pennsylvania Dutch which you are saying is the same as being completely German? But none of my familys last names seem similar to your other last names on this sight. Could we have been a different group of settlers? (Just curious) My husbands mother was a Bender from the Nazareth area and they claim to be Pennsylvania Dutch. I guess the bottom line is I can trace the Roan, Barger, Crawley, and Vance names way back to my Great Grandparents and am very proud to be considered a true Pennsylvanian.............Whereever I go they claim I have an accent and ask if I am from Pennsylvania (lol)

He and his sons ( one, whose name is Christopher ) fought with the Militia in the Revolutionary War at the Battle of Brandywine. I would like to find an Ancestor Roll number for my mother's line. Comments: Revisiting the site again - after 1998 and 2002 my e-mail has changed again. My Dad recently gave me a book with all the families who ever lived in our village of KUCHEN in the state of Baden-Württemberg in South-West Germany. The book shows me that a large number of the ECKLE family emigrated to the US between 1800 and 1900. If anybody is interested in this I can mail/fax more details. Also, if anybody is interested in any relatives coming from KUCHEN since 1550, please mail me, I might be able to help. It took the authors (mother & son)20 years to produce this book, with public funding. Unfortunately due to the data protection act people born after 1900 could not be included in this issue.

Many variations of spelling of these names. Although my direct lines stayed in Upper Mt. Bethel, Northampton Co., there are many ties to Lehigh Co. in these families.

I tested 12/25, then the 37, and a little while back the mtDNA, I don't have results, as yet. We have a 25/25 marker match with another male cousin in the Texas branch. I'm the California branch, and so on. As a Gen-DNA neophyte, steer me to the first three books (at least) on your list, that would get me started off best. If you don't mind, Thank you, Lloyd

I thought it was interesting that some of the Kerchner's were involved in the church because my grandfather was a reverend. His name was Clarence Allen Kerschner. Comments: Enjoy your site. I've been living in Germany for nearly 30 years, but I'm an American and still haven't figured out where in SW Germany, Alsace or Switzerland my Maurers came from (probably immigrant ancestor Christian Maurer, 1765 to Pennsylvania on Ship Polly, family probably originally from a German-speaking area of Switzerland). Excellent sites like yours help me and many others, and for this I thank you.

Comments: I actually discovered your site(s) by entering on Google, "German Nicknames". Learned much from your "naming patterns, letter/sound substitutions". Actually, I am looking for references to a g, g, grandmother's given name, which , due to the inability to read a census taker's handwriting may have been Lugwiga, Hedwiga, or any number of possibilities. I believe she settled in WI, by way of PA, in around 1850. Thanks for your work to help us "newbies".

Comments: I am the Treasurer of the Pennsylvania German Folklore Society - York Chapter. Our ancesters came up from PA in 1804+ and we are celebrating our 200th year in 2004. The Horner family was one of the settler families that made the 500 mile trek in their conestoga wagons. Our family still resides on part of the land we settled on 200 years ago. What a legacy ! Across the road remains our family cemetery which now is "under attack" by the Town of Richmond Hill and the land developer. The fight continues. Would like to hook up with any Horners in PA.

Comments: I'm not a native Pennsylvanian, nor do I have PA Deutsch ancestry (although I do have a few German ancestors who settled early on in Appalachia). But I keep close tabs on the results being posted on the DNAPrint Log Book (I posted my results there--87% IE, 13% EA-- in October 2003--great idea to set up that Log Book!) I am increasingly intrigued by the number of people with no known "Asian" ancestry who present with "East Asian" results. My opinion (based on no expertise in genetics, admittedly ;-) is that this "East Asian" result is really just Native American DNA for which no standard has been established (in other words, it differs in some way from the standard that Ancestry by DNA has set for "Native American DNA." Likely some tribal origin difference.) Even Ancestry by DNA seems to be coming around to this view, and hopefully the 2.5 and 3.0 DNAPrint tests--when they are available--will clear up the confusion.
